Natural Sleeping Aid
Dec 7, 2008
Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder in all North America and in Europe. One-third of the US population cannot sleep well to function well during the day. And One-half of those people have only one or two bad nights a week. The other half spend countless sleepless nights tossing and turning, staring at the alarm clock and feeling miserable. These people also spend countless days exhausted.

Here are some suggested natural sleeping aids to help you sleep tight:

  • Get a comfortable bed. Sleeping may also be disturbed because the individual is uncomfortable in his or her bed, soft beds are usually better for sleeping than firm ones.
  • Don’t drink alcohol. Alcohol can make you feel drowsy and may actually put you to sleep, but it has the unpleasant side effect of waking you up in the middle of the night because of headaches, a full bladder or gastric upset. In addition, once alcohol’s sedative effects wears off, there’s a rebound effect that actually makes trouble falling back to sleep. For a better night’s sleep, skip the nightcap.
  • Maintain a normal schedule. Most insomniacs become so desperate that they’ll go to sleep any time that they can. But, perhaps the most important rule for people with insomnia is to keep a strict sleep wake schedule. If you cannot sleep one night, simply get up at your usual time the next morning and don’t take any naps. Chances are you will be ready for a sound sleep by the next night.
  • Take a hot bath. Having a hot bath taken two hours before bedtime is a wonderful way to relax staying in it for at least 20 minutes makes your body ready for sleep. Do not bathe in very hot water, however, if you are pregnant or have any significant health problems, ask your doctor.

Sleep Tight
Dec 6, 2008

Sleep tight means sleep well. In many parts of the English-speaking world, this is a very well used phrase. It’s been common at bedtime for many years in the form of good night, sleep tight, don’t let the bedbugs bite or similar.

How much sleep do we need? The word of the day is that adults need eight hours of sleep per night. Sleep researchers answer with a resounding “no.”

In the book of No More Sleepless Nights by Peter Hauri, Ph.D says “that while different individuals have very different sleep needs, the amount remains amazingly constant for each person”. He tells the story of a 70 year old nurse who slept only one hour each night, took no naps during the day and said that she never felt tired. She said she didn’t understand why other people wasted so much time in bed. She had averaged the same amount of sleep each night since she was a child.

Some people may need 9, 10 or even 11 hours of sleep per night. Studies demonstrate that people perform just as well cognitively if they are sleep deprived. What happen is that people start to demonstrate intellectual problems when they are worried about how little they sleep. If you think you will be impaired, you will be. If you sleep for 90 minutes and when you wake up and someone tell you that you have slept for eight hours, you will feel great. But if you sleep for eight hours and someone wake you up and tell you that you have only slept for 45 minutes, you will feel exhausted.
